Essex Basketball
Center Project
Park & Recreation Subcommittee
Essex Basketball
Center (EBC) Quick Update April 19th
As you are likely
aware in late March the Zoning Commission unanimously approved our
application for the Basketball Center at the site of the old Park
& Ride next to the Essex Fire Company No. 1. We are most appreciative
of the broad base support for the Project, the many people who came
out in support of the application and the Zoning Commission's thorough
and fair review of the Project.
Noteworthy
at the Hearing was the Valley Regional High School Varsity Team
who were all there and spoke of the importance of the facility even
though they had their State Semi Final Game the next day. The Subcommittee
presenters did an excellent job of covering all of the issues and
were supported by attorney John Bennet, who donated his time to
the Project.
We
started last week formulating the construction Plan with local contractors
along with Dick Gates, a local land surveyor and Bob Doane, the
project engineer, again both of whom donated their many hours. Below
is a picture early last Thursday morning, April 15th when many people
were paying their taxes. Included in the photo are representatives
from Sullivan Paving, Connected Electric, CL&P, Dick Gates and
Bob Doane and part of the Subcommittee. Please do thank these people
as you see them in the community given they continue to work to
make this happen.
The
good news is we have preliminarily targeted for breaking ground
the first full week of September. Please watch for further information
and know we welcome anyone who wishes to participate in helping
the Park & Recreation Commission & Department make this
a reality. Please feel free to contact either, Rick Audet, our new
Park & Recreation Director or Mary Ellen Barnes, our Park &
Recreation Program Manager. Both Rick and Mary Ellen have done a
great job with our parks and recreational programs as well as supporting
the EBC Subcommittee on this journey.
What's
Going on in Essex?
Come
along and see what the Essex Park and Recreation Department
offers the residents of our three village.
We maintain 10 different scenic
locations that offer residents everything from swimming to baseball
fields to the perfect picnic spot. Each park offers its own
unique features to suit many needs.
Throughout the seasons, we
offer many programs that delight all ages and tastes, whether you
like sports, hiking, swimming, picnicking or just taking a stroll.
Take
a stroll and see what goes on in the little town of Essex.
Along
with our programs, we provide the locations for many local organizations
to have their Farmers Markets, the Essex Lions Lobster Bake,
Craft Fairs, and many other events including the popular Summer
Concert Series on Wednesday nights this summer.
The
commission is constantly seeking new programs and ways to improve
our existing ones. If you have any suggestions or would like to
be involved, please come to one of our meetings held the first Wednesday
of each month at Essex Town Hall at 7:00 PM or contact the Park
and Recreation Director.
