Temporary Pistol Permit Applications

  • Fully complete the application.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age. Positive identification (operator's license or certified birth certificate) is required at time of fingerprinting. Provide a copy of both your operator's license and birth certificate.
  • It is preferred, but not required, that you provide three letters of recommendation. Providing such would assist in verifying the applicant's suitability to carry a firearm.
  • Arrangements may be made through the Resident Trooper's Office (767-1054) for fingerprinting. Two fingerprint cards (SPBI and FBI) will be obtained from each applicant.
  • Completed notarized applicantions are to be submitted to the Essex Resident Trooper's Office, and will only be accepted with the following items:
    • $19.25 cashier's check or money order made payable to "Commissioner of Public Safety".
    • $35.00 cashier's check or money order made payable to "Town of Essex".
    • $35.00 cashier's check or money order made payable to "Department of Public Safety".
    • The applicant must furnish a letter or certificate attesting to the successful completion of a course regarding the safety and use of pistols and revolvers, signed by a certified instructor.
  • Processing will take approximately six to eight weeks. Applicant will be contacted by the First Selectman's Office.

NOTE:

  • Temporary Permits are valid for 60 days and cannot be renewed.
  • If the Temporary Permit expires prior to obtaining a State permit, you must reapply to the Town for a temporary permit.
  • Obtaining a Temporary Permit is a prerequisite to obtaining a State Permit.
  • After obtaining the Temporary Permit, contact the Special Licensing and Firearms Unit of the Connecticut State Police (860-685-8290) to learn how to obtain the State Permit.
