Parking Regulations

As a reminder, the following state statutes and town ordinances regarding parking are enforced in Essex:
"Unless otherwise designated by a sign established by the traffic authority, no vehicle shall be parked within the right-of-way line of any town highway for more than twenty-four (24) consecutive hours, nor in the paved portion of any town highway for more than two (2) consecutive hours." Violators are subject to towing of vehicle, and/or an infraction in the amount of $49.
"During any snowstorms or thereafter while plowing or snow removal is in process, the parking of vehicles is prohibited on all town highways." Violators are subject to towing of vehicle, and/or an infraction in the amount of $49.
"Commercial trucks and buses shall not be parked in the paved portion of any town road longer than the time required to load or unload passengers or cargo, nor at any time longer than twenty (20) minutes, except in such areas and for such periods of time as may be designated by the traffic authority." Violators are subject to towing of vehicle, and/or an infraction in the amount of $49.
In addition to the aforementioned town ordinances, there are also numerous state statutes governing parking in Essex. The most common are as follows, most subject to a $75 fine:
"No vehicle shall be permitted to remain stationary within ten feet of any fire hydrant…"
"No vehicle shall be permitted to remain parked within twenty-five feet of an intersection or a marked crosswalk thereat, or within twenty-five feet of a stop sign…"
"No vehicle shall park…as to obstruct or interfere with the ingress to or egress from any private driveway or alleyway."
